Caring for the Environment
We have an on-going commitment to ensure that all our farming and production processes have the minimum impact on the local community and their environment.
Here are just a few of the ways in which we strive to make a positive difference to the important issues we all face in preserving our environment for the next generation.
Preserving the Landscape200,000 trees and over 5,000 metres of hedgerow have been planted in and around our farm land throughout East Anglia. This safeguards the habitat of our local wildlife, re-generates the landscape and reduces the visual impact our farm and factory buildings might have on the local surroundings. We also own and preserve a piece of natural Norfolk woodland called Poppy Wood, which is used and enjoyed by the local community.
Reducing Food MilesWe are committed to keeping our food miles as low as commercially possible:
Our Operations
Bernard Matthews Farms are proud to say, that we are one of the few UK poultry meat companies to be awarded the ISO 14001 accreditation, a standard awarded to the company for the environmental management systems in place within and around our factories. These stringent systems ensure our manufacturing processes minimise their impact upon the environment.
Saving EnergyWe participate in the C Red initiative which is a National Energy Saving campaign designed to help reduce global warming. This campaign is backed by the government and founded by the local University of East. Anglia
Local PR and internal communication initiatives encourage employees to save more energy in their own homes and in the workplace including lift sharing schemes and Energy Raiders appointed across all departments.
Alternative Energy
Bernard Matthews Farms is actively looking at sustainable development as part of its corporate responsibility. A key part of this is to invest to reduce and / or offset our carbon footprint. We are currently looking to invest in energy from wind and investigating generating energy from waste.
Energy from wind is clean, reliable and affordable and wind farms can be an on-going source of revenue for local communities to reinvest in projects such as developing affordable housing or children's playgrounds. This is why we are planning to show real commitment by investing in the development of a number of small wind farms across Norfolk and Suffolk, in partnership with the community, and do our bit to help future generations enjoy this planet.
