Our Do's and Don'ts

There are a number of myths around our farming and food practices which, we’re pleased to tell you, are not true and things we definitely don’t do.

The truth is, that our number one priority is the welfare of our turkeys and there are also lots of positive things about Bernard Matthews Farms of which you might not be aware…

We Do:

We’re proud to say that...

  • We Do hatch and rear all our Bernard Matthews Farms turkeys in Britain on our East Anglian farms
  • We Do feed our indoor and free-range turkeys on a nutritious cereal-based diet
  • We Do source the wheat in our turkey’s diet from East Anglia – ‘the grain bowl of Britain’
  • We Do make sure our turkeys are regularly inspected, not only by our own farmers, but also by an independent vet
  • We Do open our farms to visits from independent bodies such as DEFRA and representatives of major UK retailers
  • We Do ensure all our farms are Quality British Turkey and Farm Assured (Red Tractor) certified
  • We Do employ experienced farmers whose No. 1 priority is the welfare of our turkeys
  • We Do ensure all our turkeys are farmed in line with the Farm and Animal Welfare Council’s '5 Freedoms':
    1. Freedom from Hunger and Thirst
    2. Freedom from Discomfort
    3. Freedom from Pain, Injury or Disease
    4. Freedom to Express Normal Behaviour
    5. Freedom from Fear and Distress
  • We Do use only natural colours and flavours in our products
We Don't:

We’re proud to say that...

  • We Don't keep any of our turkeys in cages
  • We Don't and have never, battery farmed
  • We Don't use any growth promoters or hormones
  • We Don't allow or condone the mistreatment of our turkeys in any way
  • We Don't use any imported turkey in our Bernard Matthews Farms range
  • We Don't use any artificial flavours or colours in any of our products
  • We Don't use any hydrogenated fat in any of our products
